Two children - one male, one female - to each family unit. It was written very clearly in the rules.
Why did this town only let a family consist of only two children! And can only have one boy and one girl? I wonder if it was because they didn't want to have too many people in their town and wanted to just keep their town small. But what if someone has two or more children like triplets on accident? Or if they had two girls or two boys? I wonder if that happen if they would take one of those babies and replace the baby with another one, but a boy or girl depending if it was two boys or two girls. I wonder if something would happen to the parents or would the town say it was just an accident?
Chapter 2
"But to be honest, Jonas," his father said, "for me there was not the element of suspense that there is with your Ceremony. Because I was already fairly certain of what my Assignment was to be."
Too bad for him he already knew what his Assignment , or job i think , was. So he didn't get a surprise of what he got for an Assignment, which was a Nurturer. I bet it would have been better if his parents didn't tell him what he was going to get for an Assignment , so that he could have been surprised at least a little. I wonder if it was against the rules to figure out what was your assignment was before you have received it. It looked pretty obvious though because he spent a lot of time at the Nurturing Center when he had free time, so he could have made that conclusion himself.
Chapter 3
The apple had changed. Just for an instant. It had changed in mid-air, he remembered. Then it was in his hand, and he looked at it carefully, but it was the same apple. Unchanged. The same size and shape: a perfect sphere. The same nondescript shade.
I bet while it was in the air it was turning so fast that it seemed that it had changed its form because the surface of an apple is not very, very straight or perfectly curved it is a little bumpy and so the apple might have been turning so fast that your eyes weren't able to see that fast, so it looked like it changed shape.
Chapter 4
What happens when they make the actual release? Where exactly did Roberto go?
I wonder if releasing people means like letting people go from life .... like dieing. Is it possible if where Roberto went was where you would die and how would they die would they be killed, would they drink something to kill them peacefully, would they live there until they died or they would maybe even kill themselves. Would they make the release themselves or would someone do it for them? This is mind bottling....
Chapter 5
You're ready for the pills, that's all. That's the treatment for stirrings.
Stirrings.. I guess those are the dreams that are awkward to talk about to anyone...But why would you have to talk medication for it? Is it against the rules to have the kinds of dreams !?!?!?! Or is it just inappropriate to have those dreams. I still wouldn't see why you would have to take pills for it though. I see that taking medication for this is just a waste of medication.
Chapter 6
It was as if the first Caleb were returning.
I can't believe that their first child was killed! And now the community Lets them have another chance?!?! What if their 2nd children dies too? Will the community let them have another? Their first kid was killed in a very uncommon way too! He drowned! I think that is because of his parents! So if that happened i wouldn't let them have another child. Those parents are very, very, very lucky to have a second chance.
Chapter 7
Then the Chief Elder moved ahead in her speech.
Well i guess everyone has a chance of being Chief Elder. Well i guess the ones that are smart.Because I think it wouldn't be good if a not very smart person ran the country. I guess she was a smart person. And that in this community it does not care if the Chief Elder would be a girl or boy and I find that good because maybe sometimes a girl could be a better leader than a boy...
Chapter 8
Jonas has been selected to be our next Receiver of Memory
That job has to be hard...The name doesn't exactly suite the job though.... Receiver of Memory sounds like someone who is like an historian, but in this story it's not it's more like being president.. You have to have intelligence, integrity, courage, and wisdom. Intelligence to make the right choices, courage to have to make hard choices , and wisdom to make smart choices. So i wonder why they call the job Receiver of Memory...But anyways I am really happy Jonas got it.
Chapter 9
"What happened to her?"he asked nervously. But his parents looked blank. "We don't know."
I wonder what SHE did wrong. And it bothers me to think what happened to her and why her parents don't know what happened because it happened in the auditorium in front of the whole community,s so should know what happened. And i don't see why they just say they name of the person because I don't see any harm in telling people because it's not like if your said it then your would die. This community, I personally think, is sometimes trying to keep things too good like in this case.
Chapter 10
He couldn't imagine what the thousands of pages contained.
He couldn't imagine? NO WAY. I can't believe that they didn't use any other books in school except for a dictionary, a community volume, and the Book of Rules. Why doesn't this community have maybe at least a math book or a little fiction story what's the harm in letting the people of the community have more than just three books? Is it because they don't want them to leave the community to see the things in the books? I don't like the idea of not having any books than just three books that don't seem interesting to read at all.
Chapter 11
"Why don't we have snow, and sleds, and hills?"
...No snow? No sleds? No hills?!?!?!? I can't believe this! They took everything Earthy away for their own needs! I think it is better if they were still there because then it wouldn't be so humanized. I would love to have snow because it's so cool! you can do so many things with snow! And what if your didn't have water? You could melt the snow! And sledding is so fun! I went once and I wish I could go sledding everyday!
Chapter 12
"We shouldn't have!" Jonas said fiercely.
I agree with Jonas that they should have kept color. It would've made life more enjoyable because then you would be able to paint and draw with something than black and white. You'd get you see so much more. You see the object, but you can also see the color of the object. I think it would be more interesting to see something with color than without because it adds for feeling to the object.
Chapter 13
"We really have to protect people from wrong choices."
Do you really? It would help people, but it is a natural thing to make wrong choices! And making mistakes helps you learn because you know what you did wrong and you wouldn't do it again. It makes people more controlled than helped I mean this community is not exactly free. It is a community that is like run by a control freak. There is not one piece of freedom in this community except having the chance to leave the community if you want.
Chapter 14
"They selected me and you to lift that burden from themselves."
Well...Being the Receiver of Memory is not all a good job after all... You have to go through pain and hunger when you really shouldn't have to. It's like taking one for the team except the team is the whole community and so that no one else has to experience it themselves. It's like making someone else keep the memories for them because they themselves don't want to experience the pain and sadness of bad times in life back then. But at least you have some good memories.
Chapter 15
The Giver looked away, as if he could not bear to see what he had done to Jonas. "Forgive me, " he said.
Was that too much for Jonas? A war? Wounded? Right now it's like.....so common. Every minute you can wonder if someone has died in Iraq and if anyone will even know. You can see a lot of documentaries on it too on TV.There are books about wars. But even so i guess you couldn't experience the pain unless you joined the army.
Chapter 16
"And they won't be part of my life anymore. . . And they'll be well cared for and respected."
They won't see each other anymore. That's not cool because why can't you see them, there's no point why you can't see them. But they get cared for very much. At least they are not left alone to do everything by themselves. They have people to help them do everything like taking baths. And they won't get mistreated like being stolen from.
Chapter 17
"Then I wave bye-bye," he said, in the special sweet voice he used when he spoke to the newchild.
I wonder where is Elsewhere or is it like Hell or Heaven. And it's a baby so how can it go Elsewhere and still stay alive alone. So I guess it's like hell then because a baby can't take care of him or her self. But what if it's an adult or maybe teenager does release mean they get kicked out of the community for them?
Chapter 18 - 19
...He killed the baby. And put the baby in a trash chute. How could release be murder or suicide. Why do they have to put them down a garbage chute instead of being put in a coffin, being buried, and having a ceremony for them. Why don't they even care. Someone died and they don't even care! I can't believe it!
Chapter 20
"She's very efficient at her work, your red-haired friend. Feelings are not part of the life she's learned."
Feelings aren't in this community either...WOW they pretty much took out everything that cause problems like if someone is feeling mad they might beat someone up. But its not that good not having feelings. I like to feel something when something happens. It's not so fun if your watching a movie or something and your just sitting there watching it and not feeling anything towards the film or show. It's sometimes not as fun when you don't feel anything.
Chapter 21
"First thing tomorrow morning."
There going to kill Gabriel! Jonas put some of the memories into him though...Then all the memories are gonna go to the community like what happened with Rosemary when she asked too be released and all the memories were released to the community, but it eventually went away. I bet Jonas is going to do something about it because he saw what releasing a person is, he gave Gabriel some memories, and he is already gonna break the rules by doing that thing with the Giver.
Chapter 22 - 23
I think that the ending was alright because I would've liked it better if I really knew what the ending was, but I don't want to read the sequel...I think he died because maybe he got hypothermia or something because he was walking in the snow for about half a day or so without very warm clothes, he didn't eat for a pretty long time, and he didn't drink for a while either. He was pretty much escaping but not knowing what he is going to face which is not good, so now he faces not a very big chance of finding another civilization.
